Considering Jesus

What does it mean to know and follow Christ?
CPC _ OHC-03

A Christian is anyone who believes the Gospel or “good news” of Jesus Christ.

A Christian is anyone who believes the Gospel or “good news” of Jesus Christ. At its core, the Gospel is about who Jesus is, what Jesus has done, what Jesus is doing, and what Jesus will do to “make his blessings flow, far as the curse is found” as he brings his Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven, and as he fulfills his mission of loving people, places, and things to life.

If you are just starting to investigate Christianity, the Gospel is the single thing that must be grasped, internalized, and embraced to move forward with Jesus. Without the Gospel, life becomes unhealthy and disoriented in more ways than one can count. With the Gospel, we are placed on a trajectory toward beauty, truth, and wholeness.

The Gospel contains a “bad news” element as well as a “good news” element. The bad news is that the universe and everything in it is wearing down all the time, and people are more sinful, corrupt, and damaged—spiritually, emotionally, physically, relationally, and vocationally—than we even realize. The good news is that God, through the person and work of Jesus, intends to restore both the universe and His people to the original beauty and glory for which He created both.

Becoming a Christian means recognizing your sin and the sin that pervades all of creation, and acknowledging your need of Christ. It means believing that Jesus is the Son of God who died for the sin of the world and was raised from the dead by God the Father as the firstfruits of the resurrection of all those who believe, who will spend eternity in the fully restored kingdom of God.
