Porch Night Kicks Off Jan 18

UPDATE: Registration is now open

I don't know about you, but increasingly I am reading about what sociologists are calling an "epidemic" among us Men. This epidemic is not sexual sin or smoking or drinking or obesity or the other usual subjects. Rather, the epidemic I am reading about is that Men -- well over 40 percent of us -- report that we are lonely. Lonely at work, lonely in leisure, even lonely at home.

Can I be honest with you? The loneliness epidemic catches hold of me too. If you are like me, you wish you had more and deeper friendships than you do, but don't know how you would find the energy or time to make these friendships happen. What's more, if you are like me, you wish you had just a handful of other guys to walk the journey of faith and life alongside you.

You and I wish for this connection not because there is something wrong with us, but because there is something right with us. Even Jesus, who was in every way the perfect human, had a deep need to surround himself with friends -- ones that would "stick closer than a brother" (Proverbs 18:24).

Recently, we sent a survey out to the Men of CPC. Answers revealed that the top areas of struggle are:

  • Lack of spiritual development
  • Financial frustration due to the emptiness that can come with prosperity on the one hand, and the burden of overspending and debt on the other
  • Emotionally trapped by peer comparison at work and among friends
  • Loneliness from not being known

To address these and other challenges Men face, to pursue purposeful friendship, and to consider the fruitful, life-giving path that Jesus has forged for us all, CPC will begin a monthly Men's gathering called "Porch Night" that will include rich teaching, real conversation, and paths toward deeper friendship for CPC Men and their Nashville friends.
