Topic: Faith, Hope and Trust: Instincts or Scripture?
“The difference between thermostat and thermometer is one gives you what you could expect, the other gives you how things are...The same distinction could be drawn from our view of our instincts and Scriptures.
We have instincts, like thermostats, that drive us to what seems logical conclusions on how we lead our lives...While at the same time we have scriptures which are akin to a thermometer...objective information we are given to guide us in the many subjective circumstances we might find ourselves in...
Yet often these two are diametrically opposed and we find there is a tension between God-given instincts and God-given Scripture.
So how do we reconcile these two? The answer we most often get is... "by faith” ....It’s a good answer, but it seems incomplete. To me, it sounds like, “...I don’t have any idea how to reconcile those, so let’s call it faith...”
In May, we will chat about faith in light of this tension and how it plays out in everyday life.
Hope to see you then!
UPDATE: After the May event, Porch Night is taking the summer off. Look for more details soon as we pick back up in August!
