Adult CORE Classes

Fall 2018 CORE Classes

At the Old Hickory Blvd location, we offer classes in the template of Christian Living, Orthodoxy, Reach and Exposition (CORE). We do this through a rotating scope and sequence of standard semester-long modules of teaching on Sunday morning and Wednesday evenings. Registration is not required unless noted. 

Class Descriptions:

C – Christian Living

Life-Giving Marriage
Does the Bible really talk about love/honor/respect, constructive communication, physical intimacy and roles? Yes, yes and yes! Individuals and couples at any stage can benefit from these timeless truths about marriage—and there are few investments with a bigger payoff.

Wednesday evenings Sept. 12–Oct. 17, 6:30–8:15 p.m. or Thur. afternoons, Sept. 13–Oct. 18, 1–3 p.m., Window Room. Registration required.

Intensive Discipleship 101 Mini-Course: How to Grow & Change
What is intensive discipleship? How can we change and grow? This 3-week mini-course explains the biblical basis for intensive discipleship. 

Wednesday evenings, Oct. 31-Nov. 14, 6:30–8:30 p.m. or Thursday afternoons, Nov. 1–Nov.  15, 1–3 p.m., Window Room. Registration required.

Two Becoming One
We will begin a study of the book, Two Becoming One, which encourages couples toward deeper dependence on God and his promises and assurance, and away from performance-based relating.

The Inspirations class is for adults with special needs and seeks to develop community through fellowship, learning and parties.

Transformed into His Image
If I am in Christ I am a new creation (2 Cor. 5;17). Really? But I seem to be such a mess! Using a popular personality assessment, the Enneagram, we will uncover the distinctive qualities that set us up for both sin patterns and Christlikeness.

Christian, What Do You Believe?
We will explore the foundations of the faith. What makes us historically and uniquely Christian, and how it intersects with our modern culture.

Saint Augustine & the Mystery of Christmas
How could St. Augustine and how can we wrap our minds around the notion of the very Ruler of the stars nursing at his mother’s breast, the very Word of God wrapped in swaddling clothes, strangely wordless?

Christ, Race and Culture
We’ll examine the church's role—good and bad—in American History, and learn what our church legacy has to teach us.

Loving Our Neighbors
Ministering among the Immigrants, Migrants and Refugees. We’ll examine biblical perspectives on “widows, foreigners and orphans,” with reference to the teachings of John Calvin.

E – Exposition

A Study of Paul’s Letters to the Romans
A careful study of Paul's great letter to the Roman church.

Beyond the Veil
A Study of Hebrews. No other New Testament book connects the finished work of Christ to its Old Testament foundation, like the Epistle to the Hebrews.

Romans

We ’ll begin an in-depth study of Paul’s letter to the Romans.

John: The Beloved Disciple

We’ll take a close look at John’s account of the life and ministry of Christ. Christ took John on a lifelong journey that revealed the depths of his love and he’ll do the same for us through the study of his Scriptures.
