In our church there is a young man named Sam. Sam is part of the hospitality team, and he greets me when I walk into the building on Sunday mornings. Sam is also part of the special needs ministry at our church. He is one of many in that ministry who are part of our community—people I worship alongside and take communion with every week.
Thanks to the wise and loving service of a few dedicated church members years ago, Christ Presbyterian Church has become a place where adults and children with special needs are woven into the fabric of who we are as a church. I am so grateful for this.
In just a few weeks, Christ Presbyterian Church will host its annual VsBS—a very special Vacation Bible School for children with special needs and their siblings. VsBS is a part of our ongoing ministry to children and adults with special needs.
The children who attend VsBS are individually paired with trained leaders. Church staff, volunteers, and friends serve in a variety of roles as buddies for the kids, Bible teachers, music leaders, greeters, decorators, and coordinators of crafts, games, and snacks.
Because we follow Jesus, first and foremost above all other things, children and adults with special needs are highly valued at Christ Presbyterian Church. Pastor Scott Sauls noted that this ministry “does several things. First, it pulls a community together to participate in something that Jesus is pleased with. After all, Jesus, always gave special attention to the weak and disadvantaged. Second, it affirms that every person has dignity or, as Martin Luther King, Jr. said, ‘there are no gradations in the image of God.’ Third, it reminds us that, sometimes to our surprise, people with special needs have more to teach us about the kingdom of God than we have to teach them.”
