Jay Mathews (Head Coach/ QB's) Jay Mathews, former offensive coordinator at Briarwood Christian School from 1991-2003, joined the CPA staff during the summer of 2004. The 1st of 3 brothers born to Gary and Ann Mathews, Jay grew up in the East Lake section of Birmingham. He attended Banks High School, participating in football, track, basketball, and baseball. While a member of the Banks football squad, Jay was selected captain his senior year. He was elected to the All-City, All-Metro and All-State teams, and he won the Jimmy Sidle Most Inspirational Player award both his junior and senior seasons. Following his graduation in 1982, Jay enrolled at the University of Alabama, where he played quarterback for Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant his last season (1982) and wide receiver and defensive back for Ray Perkins (1983), graduating in 1987 with an Education Degree in English and Physical Education. While on the staff at Briarwood Christian, Coach Mathews continued his education, culminating his studies at Birmingham Theological Seminary with a master’s degree in Religious Education. In addition to his current coaching responsibilities, Jay teaches Bible in the high school. Asked what special memories he has since arriving at CPA, he responded with (1) the 2004 victory over Goodpasture, acknowledging that "our ability to shut down Patrick Turner surprised a lot of people", (2) the last second 17-14 win over DCA in 2005, and (3) the 2006 playoff victory at Camden’s home field. Jay resides in Franklin with his wife, Lisa, and their three children – Julie, Melissa, and Leigh Ann
Steve Lenger (Assistant Head Coach / RB’s Coach) – Coach Lenger was born in Anchorage, Alaska. He graduated from Lowell Senior High School in Michigan. He received a Bachelor of Science from Taylor University in Indiana and a Master’s in Education from MTSU. Currently a 6th grade math teacher at CPA, Coach Lenger is in his twelfth season at CPA. This makes him the longest tenured coach on the current staff.

Ryan McSwain (Defensive Coordinator / Defensive Line Coach) – Coach McSwain graduated from DCA, where he was the 1997 salutatorian. He was a two-time All-State pick and played on the 1996 State Championship team. McSwain graduated from Vanderbilt first with a Bachelor’s in Math and Secondary Education, then with a Master’s in Education. While at Vanderbilt he played three years on both offensive and defensive lines. He was co-president of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, a four-time Academic All-SEC player; after an injury in his senior year, he worked as a graduate assistant coach. Coach McSwain is in his fourth season as a CPA assistant football coach .Wife: Lauren
Danny Keck (Safeties Coach) – Coach Keck was born in Garden City, Michigan. In high school he was an all-division wide receiver, setting a single game reception record. He graduated from the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a Bachelor of Science in Social Studies. Keck has coached football for twelve years, including schools in Hoover City, MS and Homewood High School in Birmingham. While there, he was defensive line coach on Homewood’s 2000 5A state championship team. Coach Keck currently teaches 7th grade history at CPA. Wife: Dana. Children: Mac , Owen , Sylvie
Mike Wall (Offensive Line coach / Video Coordinator) – Coach Wall was born in Dayton, Ohio. He was a four-year varsity letter winner in high school, then graduated from American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts with a Bachelor of Science. While at AIC, he was a four-year starter at tackle on the offensive line. Coach Wall was assistant line coach at AIC before coming to CPA. He has been an assistant football coach with CPA’s middle school football team for four years. Wife: Sara. Children: Tricia, Nicole, James, Rachael ,Gabi
Ron Smith (Running Backs and Place Kickers) Born in Fayetteville NC and attended Terry Sanford High School. Was a three year starter and voted All Conference/All City County during his senior season while playing running back and strong safety. Graduated from Trevecca Nazarene University in 1988. His family consists of his wife, Michelle and Chase, Cole and Carley.
