Band

BAND—ENSEMBLE
Grade Level: 9-12 — Prerequisite: Instrument proficiency

Students in this course will pursue and improve their music skills while experiencing a myriad of performance opportunities, as well as exploring music theory and various historical and cultural aspects of music. The band will perform instrumental music in a variety of venues including pep band for sports events and a culminating showcase performance in the spring. Students should already be proficient on a band instrument.

BAND—FUSION
Grade Level: 9-12 — Prerequisite: Instrument proficiency

This course is designed for those band students with limited scheduling options. Students in this course will pursue and improve their music skills advancing in a theory of understanding while having select performance opportunities. Individual Band schedules will be designed to rotate with the students’ study hall. Performance and field trip opportunities will be determined based on the student’s availability. Credit is awarded after 2 semesters.

BEGINNING GUITAR / Fall or Spring
Grade Level: 9-12
Entry Level course/Student must be right-handed. Students taking this course will learn how to play the guitar (chords, chord relationship, strumming, and picking). Students will explore a variety of styles (blues, rock, country, Top 20, etc.) and will become familiar with types of guitars, strings, capo, etc. Students will need to have their own instrument; regular acoustic steel string guitars are recommended. Class size is limited to 12 students per semester.

COMMERCIAL MUSIC / Spring
Grade Level: 10-12 — Prerequisite: Audition

This class is designed to introduce students to performance aspects of the commercial music industry and to further develop their musical gifts in the areas of: percussion, guitar, bass, vocal, keyboard, and wind instruments. The course of study includes performance and various styles of music including pop, rock, jazz, Latin, and country. Visits from guest artists and field trips to sectors of the Nashville music industry will be a part of the curriculum. Class size limited and based on audition on May 26th. This course may be repeated for credit.

COMMERICAL PRODUCTION / Fall
Grade Level: 10-12 — Prerequisite: Interview/Instructor Approval

This class is designed to introduce students to the business of music. Units will include song writing, arranging and producing, making demos, music publishing, copyrights and licensing, how music labels function (A&R — artist & repertoire), and various aspects of music marketing such as publicity, radio promotions and distribution deals. Guest artists and field trips to sectors of the Nashville music industry will be a part of the curriculum. Limited class size.
