SPEECH Fall & Spring
Grade Level: 9-12 — .5 Credit — Required for graduation
This required course is designed to train students in the knowledge and experience of public speaking. Emphasis is given to developing a confident speaking style and connecting with the audience. Informative, demonstrative, persuasive, and entertaining speeches are pursued. Delivery styles will focus on, but are not limited to impromptu, extemporaneous, and manuscript methods. Other areas of public speaking such as debate, oral interpretation, storytelling, listening and critical thinking will be explored. The overriding focus is to identify and encourage each student's individual gifts within the realm of this class.
FORENSICS and DEBATE Fall & Spring
Grade Level: 10-12 — .5 Credit
In this course, students will develop effective speaking and debate skills through practice and evaluation. Students will participate in one forensic and one debate competition during the semester. Participation in these NFL (National Forensics League) competitions will require some after-school preparation and weekend travel. Persuasive, argumentative, and group discussion strategies will challenge and refine the student‚s public speaking skills. Students will have the benefit of equipping themselves for scholarship opportunities in this area. Some travel costs will be incurred. This course no longer will fulfill the speech requirement for graduation.
MASS COMMUNICATIONS I Fall & Spring
Grade Level: 9-12 (Upper-class students have priority)
.5 Credit — Entry Level Course
This course is a survey of mass media with emphasis on the areas of television, radio and video. Students will explore a wide sampling of aspects of mass communications such as preparation, programming, and production, while developing radio and video projects for fine arts and other school events. Emphasis will be on project work with field trips to various locations in Nashville and Middle Tennessee for onsite learning. Class size limited to 10.
(While fulfilling an elective credit, this course does not fulfill the Fine Arts credit requirement for graduation.)
MASS COMMUNICATIONS II/III/IV
Grade Level: 10-12— .5 Credit
Prerequisites: Mass Communications I, & Instructor approval Fall & Spring
This course is designed to concentrate heavily in the areas of audio and video production for the CPA community. We will experience the various responsibilities in production, such as director, producer, audio or video technician, and editor. This course will be mainly lab-project based. Students taking this class will be asked to commit to additional after-school projects. Class size is limited to 6 per semester.
Mass Comm III/IV students‚ curriculum will be structured around the General Manager duties of station management, dealing with such aspects as scheduling, budgets, and production.
